Akanezaka Onuma

⚠️ Unfortunately the tai chazuke lunch is no longer available.  The cheapest course is the JPY 5,500 lunch.

Setting aside the three Starred ramen restaurants the award for cheapest Michelin Starred meal in Tokyo was previously held by Shinjuku Kappo Nakajima but the restaurant was deleted in the 2022 Guide.  So the new winner is Akanezaka Onuma which debuted with one Star this year.

A set lunch of tai chazuke, nimono, tempura, a side dish and dessert is priced at JPY 1,800 inclusive of tax with no service charge taken.  For an extra 700 yen you can add a serving of black cod (gindara saikyo-yaki) or add a serving of grilled aitchbone beef (ichibo) for an additional JPY 1,700.  On my visit I chose the basic set.

A counter seats up to 8 and a private room up to 4.  On my visit the private room would be occupied and the counter not completely full.  There were only two staff in the restaurant - the owner/chef and second chef with no dedicated wait staff.  Guests in the private room had to ask twice for their drinks and with no conversation from the owner a lone dinner at the counter having a course kept fidgeting between courses.  There's little or no English spoken.

My food arrived after about 8 minutes.  Apart from the tempura, all the savoury elements were very good.  The tempura was terrible.  Either the oil was not hot enough or the vegetables had not been properly dried so the tempura was flabby and water-logged.  This would have never left the kitchen in a top kaiseki restaurant.  Before dessert the tea is served which is meant to be poured into your rice bowl.  Dessert itself was apple in white wine jelly.  This might have been enjoyable if the apple had been cooked in the syrup but this was raw, unpeeled apple served, effectively, alongside the jelly.

If you want the full experience you'll need to order a course menu which starts from JPY 5,500 for lunch and JPY 9,900 for dinner.  The tempura in the course looked completely different from that which was served with the lunch set.

There are so many restaurants in Japan where you can have an excellent lunch for under 2K and who cares whether or not they are Michelin starred.  If you go for lunch yourself you might have better luck with the tempura and there aren't many kaiseki restaurants in Tokyo offering dinner for around 10K.  So I wouldn't not recommend Akanezaka Onuma but I'm unlikely to be going back.
