After successfully opening the highly recommended Men Ginza Onodera Honten in Omotesando, Makiyaki Ginza Onodera chef Keiichi Terada opened Makiyaki Unagi Ginza Onodera Honten last week in Akasaka.  In case you haven't worked it out from the title, the concept is unagi grilled over firewood instead of charcoal.  Apparently there was a line of 35 people just before the restaurant opened for its first lunch service.  I went at 5pm on a weekday during the second week of opening.  One person was ahead of me and there were seats free all the time I was in the restaurant.

You order from a QR Code.  The interface and all menu items are available in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean (thank you). There are three sizes of unajyu priced at JPY 2,200, 3,300, and 4,400.  Shirayaki is JPY 4,800 or JPY 2,500 for half size.  A mini unadon is priced at JPY 980.  A variety of side dishes are also available.  Note that unajyu comes with kimosui so no need to order that separately, but if you want water you should order it.  I ordered the mid-size unajyu, half shirayaki and the smoked potato salad.  Shirayaki arrived after 8 minutes and unajyu after 12.

Potato salad tasted fairly ordinary and was quite small.  If it had been 50% bigger I'd have been happier.  Reflecting Terada-san's French cuisine background, the kabayaki tare is made with red wine.  So it's quite sweet but in a fruity way rather than a cloyingly sweet way like a normal kabayaki tare can be, and I thought it worked well.  I'd rate the quality of the unagi 7/10 (i.e. not special).  The $64,000 question though is what did grilling the unagi over firewood instead of charcoal bring?  And the answer is if I was blind tasting unagi from here and unagi charcoal-grilled from elsewhere I'd struggle to tell the difference.  That's it and that's all.
