Uchiyama held a Michelin Star from 2008 through 2018.  Lunch courses start from JPY 5,500 and dinner from JPY 22,000 but they also run a tai chazuke lunch which was priced at JPY 1,650 but increased to JPY 1,980 from January 2023.

Before the main event two starters which are always the same: tai no aradaki and yaki gomadofu.  The aradaki could have been hotter but the tofu was delicious.

There were probably about 7 thin pieces of tai, which had great flavour.  Rice is from a single pot shared between all diners.  Quality was high but two bowls was enough for me.  The tsukemono were ordinary.

A small, seasonal, dessert of made from chestnuts to finish was rich, sweet and creamy.

Chef Hidehito Uchiyama had a commanding personality and could speak English and introduced the starters separately for me, though not the chazuke nor how to eat it.  The restaurant was full and there isn't much space between each diner at the counter.

The only other Michelin-level restaurant I'm aware of still serving a chazuke lunch is Kappo Ryu (review here).  The overall experience there is much better, the meal is bigger and the starters are better.  It is (was) easier to book but it's twice the price now.  The tai is much better here.  I can't think of anywhere else in Tokyo where you can get this quality of food at this price.  But I like a bit of variety in my food so wasn't interested in booking again.

📱 Booking: 🟥 The tai chazuke lunch can only be booked via TableCheck with credit card authorization.  In principle, reservations can be made up to 90 days in advance but they are always full, mainly because most guests book again after finishing their meal.  Simultaneous start for the tai chazuke lunch.  Guests are rotated out after 50m for lunch course diners.

📍 Location:

B1F, 2-12-3 Ginza.  Approximately 3 mins on foot from nearby stations.  B1F dedicated street-facing entrance.
