The last few years has seen a number of "neo yokocho" open across Tokyo.  These include Chaos Kitchen in Shibuya Parco, Kabuki Yokocho in Tokyu Kabukicho Tower and Hobo Shinjuku Norengai.  For gourmets, the pick of the bunch is probably Toranomon Yokocho which has a choice of 22 vendors, all of them sister stores of popular (and more expensive) restaurants including Ata, Bird Land and Zurriola to name but three.

The newest neo yokocho is T-Market in the new Toranomon Hills Station Tower which opened last Friday (6th October 2023).  T-Market is not quite as gourmet as Toranomon Yokocho, some stores are more take-out oriented and not all vendors have opened yet.  Indeed, in January 2024 the top floor of the tower will host the second restaurant in Japan (the first being Maison Kei) from 3-Star Paris chef Kei Kobayashi.  But back to today and B2F where the standout opening for me is Tachigui Sushi Uogashi Yamaharu, a collaboration between a Toyosu Market wholesalers and Sushi Tsukiuda, a decent sushi restaurant in Nakameguro.  At lunch you can choose from 11 pieces for JPY 2,600, 8 pieces for JPY 1,600 or 5 pieces for JPY 900.  I chose the cheapest option.

The main problem I find with cheap sushi restaurants is not that everything is low quality but lack of consistency.  You can get some perfectly decent pieces and some pretty awful; temperature control can be all over the place; service can be hit-and-miss.  But on this one visit all the neta was good quality; with the exception of the rice for the first piece (too warm, a not uncommon problem) temperature control was OK, as was service.  Rice was very chewy and strongly flavoured with red vinegar, which is how I prefer it, and for some reason I got six pieces rather than five.

You order on a tablet and at lunch you can only order a course - all the single nigiri (which range in price from 200 yen for iwashi to 800 yen for otoro and 1,200 yen for uni) were greyed out.  Everything is in Japanese but if you're really stuck then to order just a course at lunch it shouldn't be a problem to have one of the staff assist you.

Five or six nigiri is not enough for a full meal but that's kind of the point of visiting a yokocho for a foodie: you order the smallest thing in one place and then move to another and order something else.

I arrived at 11am on a weekday and got a spot (it's standing only) immediately but by 11:30 a few people were queuing.  I expect this restaurant is going to be very busy, especially at dinner, and unfortunately they're not open all day.

I'm not really into cheap sushi, not really into standing while I eat and not really into queuing so can't compare here with any of the established standing sushi restaurants and I wouldn't go back here for a complete meal, but I'll definitely try to have the 900 yen lunch again.
