Tankiyo is a yakiniku restaurant that specialises in beef tongue.  It's normally only open at night but occasionally they open for a JPY 1,000 tongue stew lunch.  Previously this was an eat-in affair and waits of an hour and a half we're not atypical.  Recently they've switched to takeout only.  I arrived at 11:20 and there were already at least 40 people lined up but (as I expected) once they started selling at 11:30 the queue moved rapidly and I was served at 11:42.  When I'd done eating in a nearby public space just after 12 they'd sold out.

There were a lot of large pieces of tongue in the stew, easily 400g of meat and the picture just shows a portion.  The meat was super soft and delicious and enough for a full lunch.  It's hard to score.  You could imagine a thicker sauce with more layers of flavour but everyone has their own idea of what stew should be like and at this price I have no complaints.  I've paid more for inferior stews more than once.  Easily one of the most satisfying 1000 yen lunches in Tokyo.

📱 Booking: No bookings for lunch.  Previously lunch was once or twice a month but it seems like they've settled on Thursdays every week, though confirm by checking the announcement on their Twitter feed.  Cash only.  One meal per person.  If you want a second meal you can line up again but they'll probably sell out before you could be served again.
