๐ŸŸ Fish / ๐Ÿ“ Japan

๐Ÿ““ Visits: countless

Isomaru Suisan is a chain of casual restaurants serving fish.  You can preview the menus on their Website, which is poorly-designed and unfortunately in Japanese only, but at least everything is pictured.  Staff are not guaranteed to speak English but if you dine-in you use a touchscreen which is fully multilingual.  Many dishes are designed for sharing but there are around 25 kinds of kaisendon you can choose from, most priced under 1000 yen, while small side dishes start from 100 yen.  Isomaru Suisan took part in the 2020 Go To Eat Campaign.  This gave you back JPY 1,000 per person per dinner reservation so you could literally eat here for free back then.  (Here's hoping that campaign comes back.)  Before the pandemic, most restaurants in Tokyo didn't do take-out but Isomaru Suisan always has.  The takeout kaisendon is better value than any kaisendon you'll find in a depachika.  Kaisendon is generally ready within 8 minutes but if they're busy they should tell you.  If you can speak Japanese you can order by phone and pick-up at your leisure.  If you're ordering in person and have other shopping to do you can order, pay and come back later.

Prior to the pandemic many branches were 24h but during the period of self-restraint some were completely closed and since then, not all have re-opened with with the same hours.  Most are still open till very late but check before you visit a particular branch.  With branches all over Japan, close to major stations and late opening, Isomaru Suisan is one of the most consistent and convenient choices when you want a quick, cheap, reasonable quality and healthy meal.
