A restaurant right in the middle of Roppongi that's open till 2am will either frighten or excite you, or perhaps both in equal measure. But once you know it's co-owned by the chef of Sazenka, the only Chinese restaurant in Japan with 3 Michelin Stars and where courses start from JPY 33,000, it should at least pique your interest. The cheapest course menu here was JPY 9,990 on my visit but I had the the "Peking Duck Short Course" priced at JPY 11,550. At time of writing that course is now JPY 10,000 and there's a superior course priced at JPY 23,000. There's also an extensive a-la-carte menu in Japanese and (unusually for a Chinese restaurant in Japan, English). The menu includes Beijing, Sichuan, and Cantonese dishes and you can
preview it on their Website.
The best dishes were probably the 6 cold starters: piquant, fresh ingredients and perfectly prepared. The
ika with asparagus was excellent but didn't taste Chinese to me and the main ingredient had already been used in the appetizers. The extra I paid for "Peking Duck" ended up just being Peking duck skin in a pancake. The only reason I didn't feel so cheated was because this wasn't the first time this had happened to me. The pig's trotter was properly cooked but lacked the real complexity of flavour I'd expect in a real Chinese restaurant. Rice is not included in the course so I ordered an extra dish of zha jiang mian (+JPY 1780), which were a bit of a disappointment.
You need to order a rice or noodle dish separately if you want to be full and a dessert separately if you need something sweet. Nonetheless, 11K for 9 "Chinese" courses / 14 items at dinner in Minato-ku is good value, but it's not authentically Chinese.
