๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ The Tabelog Award 2022
Tabelog Award 2022 The Tabelog Award 2021 was announced on Monday 31st January 2022. As with last year, awards were announced online. Restaurants up for consideration are those which have scored over 4.0 during 2021 and following a vote taken in the first two weeks of November by Tabelog users who have visited the restaurants. The full list is at https://award.tabelog.com/en?lang=en including Best New Entry at https://award.tabelog.com/en/restaurants/new so again, no point in repeating it here but below I list the changes from 2021.
As last year, there are no restaurants debuting with a Gold award. Unlike last year the "Best New Entry" list exactly matches the "new" Silver restaurants list. But three of these restaurants (Naruse, Ete and L'evo) relocated in the past couple of years and all had Silver awards prior to 2021 and Chiune relocated in 2021 and was awarded Gold in every year prior to relocation. If a restaurant relocates it will generally get a new Tabelog entry and scores are not carried forward so it can take a year or so for enough high-scoring reviews to come through for a restaurant to regain a previous award. That's what's happening here: these are not new restaurants just relocations. This year I've broken out the restaurants receiving their first ever Tabelog award and those which have had an award prior to 2021 but missed out last year.
The list is definitely less busy compared with previous years. There were 339 changes on my list last year and only 219 this year. The total number of restaurants listed was 624 in 2020, 536 in 2021 and 522 in 2022.
How useful/definitive the Tabelog Awards are is debatable. I take it as one indicator of trend and nothing more. Unlike Michelin, awards can go to any restaurant in Japan so it can be useful to pick up new restaurants in areas Michelin doesn't cover. Anyway, that's enough blurb. I hope you find this list useful.
