Tenoshima has held one Michelin Star since the 2020 Tokyo Guide.  Owner/chef Ryohei Hayashi previously worked at the legendary Kikunoi in Kyoto and the 2-star outpost in Tokyo.  Only one, omakase course is offered.  Initially this was JPY 10,000 but since August 2019 increased to JPY 13,000 plus tax and 10% service.  There's a, somewhat dated, write-up on the background of Tenoshima on Pocket Concierge.

The food at Tenoshima follows the structure of a kaiseki meal to an extent but is not orthodox.  Rather than focusing on a single ingredient per plate, Hayashi-san combines one or a few main ingredients with original combinations of vegetables, sauces and seasonings.  Instead of the usual final dish of rice, miso soup and pickles, chef serves a combination of inarizushi, sabazushi and anago oshizushi and following that somen in dashi.  The quality of ingredients is very good.  With 3 kinds of sushi, somen, dessert, tea and matsukaze to come it can be quite a lot of food towards the end of the meal so you can vary the size of the sushi and somen.  For drinks there's an excellent selection of very moreish, house-made, seasonal non-alcoholic offerings.

There's a more casual and modern atmosphere to the restaurant than a traditional kaiseki restaurant.  Music was fairly loud.  While there's a 6-seat counter, most seating is at one of three four-person tables and chef spends a lot of his time in the back kitchen cooking so you're not going to miss a lot at a table seat and you can see the chefs working in the back kitchen when seated at the far-end table.  Service is excellent.  There are no dedicated waiting staff at Tenoshima.  The chefs present all the dishes and one of the second chefs is a native English speaker, very professional and engaging.

Tenoshima is reasonable value for money.  If you want to eat refined, seasonal Japanese food but are uninspired at the thought of eating yet another traditional kaiseki meal I would recommend a visit.
