Tempura Miyashiro

⚠️ Unfortunately the teishoku lunch has stopped and the cheapest lunch course is JPY 12,000 now.  Will update again if this changes.

Tempura Miyashiro has held a Michelin star since the 2020 Tokyo Guide.  I tried and failed on multiple occasions to go for the walk-in only JPY 1,500 kakiagedon lunch, every time the restaurant purportedly fully reserved for customers having the full lunch course.  I eventually gave up on them but during the pandemic they made a change: instead of the unobtainable kakiagedon they switched to serving a short teishoku lunch, available Tuesday to Friday.  The teishoku lunch is served by a different chef and assistant.

The JPY 2,000 lunch set consists of two shrimp, 3 seasonal fish, 4 seasonal vegetables and a mini tendon/kakiagedon.  You can have free refils of rice, pickles and good akadashi.

There can often be long waits at tempura restaurants but this isn't a problem at Tempura Miyashiro.  Firstly, there's no tendon-only lunch option so you don't have the problem of the course being interrupted while the chef has to fry all the pieces for a tendon order.  Secondly, there are two fryers: the assistant chef fries the final mini tendon at his own station while the main chef can continue to fry at his own pace.

The restaurant is nothing to look at from the outside but don't let that put you off.  I've tried many cheap tempura restaurants and they all end up a disappointment: too greasy, batter too thick or a lingering aftertaste of stale oil.  Lunch at Tempura Miyashiro is not like that at all.  Along with Tempura Ise, this is the best value tempura lunch in Tokyo.

📱 Booking: You can't book for lunch but if you're crossing town it's worth calling ahead to confirm they're actually open that day.  Tabelog shows when they are open for dinner but is not reliable for determining if they are open for lunch.  It's only an 8-seat counter but (at least for now) I've never seen them full at lunchtime so whatever time you go you shouldn't have to queue.
