Makadeki Shokudo is only open for lunch and only offers one, all-vegetarian, daily-changing set consisting of a main dish, two side dishes, rice (free refills) and miso soup (free refills). Prices went up by 100 yen from 1st Feb 2023 so the set is now JPY 1,200. If you pay an extra 100 yen you can have brown rice. If you request take-out you can save 200 yen.
The quality of cooking here is above the usual standard of Japanese restaurants at this price. A lot of the food is cooked to order, the vegetables are fresh and full of flavour. Portions aren't particularly large and, other than the rice, there isn't that much in the way of carbs or protein so if you're a big eater you will feel hungry quite soon after.
The main downside is wait times, which can be excessive. If you're next to be served, normally your food should arrive within 10 minutes. But if there are a bunch of people in front of you and/or there's only one member of staff working you might have to wait 40 minutes. A couple of times I gave up waiting after 10 minutes as there were 6-8 people ahead of me still waiting to be served. The best time to arrive is 12 or 5 past when the restaurant opens or after 13:45 when they're less busy. That said, on my most recent visit I arrived at 12:05, there were two staff and 5 people ahead of me and the first 4 were not served until 12:20 and I was served at 12:23. Note also there's no point in arriving earlier because they won't be ready for you (and there's nowhere to wait) and if you arrive after 2:30 they might have run out of food. Finally, they don't always have brown rice and if they do they often sell out early. It's an open kitchen and if they're cooking fried items you're going to reek a little when you leave.
