Ao Nishiazabu kanban

This restaurant got a very high Tabelog rating in the space of a few months: 4.26 at time of writing.  You can only book through Omakase and slots fill up very quickly: they only have eight seats and only do one sitting a day.  They get fairly regular cancellations though.

It's a 13-course omakase menu which was originally priced at JPY 18,000 and went up to 23,000 JPY a few months after the restaurant opened.  Everyone is served at the same time.  It's quite a large and long meal.  I had to go outside and stretch my legs at least once.  The nearest comparisons with this restaurant are probably Chiune (more Japanese, review here) and Ginza Ooshi (more French, review here).

The staff are quite engaging.  They don't really speak English but one of the beautiful hand-written menus they produce each day was produced for me in perfect English.  In my haste to get out I forgot to take a snap of the menu but the pics of the dishes on Tabelog are very similar.

If you can't get into Chiune or Ginza Ooshi I'd recommend you visit at least once and make up your own mind but as a regular at Chiune, while the food wasn't bad I wouldn't say it was great.

  1. Adding a data point: GF and I went to Ao recently (crazy to the prices these days vs back in 2020!). It started super strong, and then kind of tailed off. Refreshment courses were still good, but head-scratchingly they served 2 risotto dishes with slightly undercooked rice. Also, 2 asparagus courses? Maybe if we could understand Japanese there could be some reasoning given by the chef (long intro for each course in Japanese that was only simply translated to English for us in terms of how to eat it. Still much appreciated though). GF scored it 8/10, and me a just barely 10/10.

  2. Yeah, 44-48k now! At that price it should be life-changing.
